Gophers haunted by recent close losses to Hawkeyes

The degree to which the Iowa Hawkeyes live rent free inside P.J. Fleck’s head is difficult to gauge, but the Gophers’ rival to the south has set up some amount of real estate in Fleck’s bald noggin. With an 0-6 record against the Hawkeyes, the Gophers football coach can recall a catalog of bad memories, where his Minnesota teams have come up short on an annual basis since 2017. He doesn’t have to go back far to remember the one that sticks with him most.“Last year, (we) turned the ball over twice in three minutes,” Fleck told the Pioneer Press. “Or three minutes, whatever it was.”Tied 10-10 at a freezing Huntington Bank Stadium last November, Mo Ibrahim fumbled at the Iowa 13-yard line with five minutes left. After an Iowa punt, Athan Kaliakmanis threw an interception with two minutes remaining. After that second giveaway, the Hawkeyes put together a 42-yard drive and kicked a 21-yard field goal to win 13-10.“It usually comes down to (taking care of) the ball,” Fleck said. “We’ve had...

By LISA MASCARO, FARNOUSH AMIRI, STEPHEN GROVES and KEVING FREKING (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite deepening opposition, Rep. Jim Jordan is digging in for a fight to become House speaker ahead of a Friday vote, even as his Republican colleagues are warning the hard-edged ally of Donald Trump that no more threats or promises can win their support. The House opened for Jordan’s third try at the gavel, but Republicans have no realistic or workable plan to unite the fractured GOP majority, elect a new speaker and return to the work of Congress that has been languishing since hard-liners ousted Kevin McCarthy at the start of the month.“The American people are hungry for change,” Jordan said in a news conference at the Capitol.Drawing on his Ohio roots, Jordan, who is popular with the GOP’s right-flank activist base of voters, positioned his long-shot campaign alongside the history of American innovators including the Wright brothers, urging his colleagues to elect him to the s...

ST. LOUIS -- What are you going to dress up as for Halloween? That's a question most people ask themselves or others at least once a year. Sure, you can go as a witch, warlock, vampire, or ghost. You may even want to go as this year's most popular option, Weird Barbie. There are so many more costumes to choose from. One of my favorites is finding this year's "Most St. Louis" costume. A new study in Colorado is trying to answer definitively whether psychedelics help at least some patients dealing with distress over advanced cancer.Dr. Stacy Fischer, co-leader of cancer prevention and control at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, said several small studies have found that psychedelic drugs may help patients who are experiencing demoralization or despair because of their impending mortality. The study CU is part of will have a larger and more diverse group of people, which hopefully will produce more conclusive evidence of whether there’s a benefit, she said.“There’s so much science that needs to be done in this space,” Fischer said.Psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, is still a Schedule 1 drug, meaning the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration determined it has high potential for misuse and no accepted medical use.But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration also released guidance earlier this year for trials involving ...

Kurtenbach: The 49ers’ biggest weakness is now impossible to miss

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 20:43:53 GMT

SANTA CLARA — Conventional NFL roster-building says to build from the inside out. The closer you are to the ball at the line of scrimmage, it’s alleged, the more critical you are.Niners coach Kyle Shanahan doesn’t subscribe to that school of thought. And, sure enough, six games into the 49ers’ campaign, it’s undeniable that San Francisco has an issue on the interior of its offensive line. It’s the type of issue that might not change Monday night’s game with the Vikings, but it will almost certainly prove problematic when they play the NFC’s best down the line this season.Yes, it took six games to find a flaw in the 49ers’ winning machine, but now that it’s been identified, it won’t be easy to ignore. In fact, you might not see anything else.It was right there, in the middle of everything. How did we miss it?The Browns’ defense created a blueprint for how to beat the 49ers last Sunday. It, ironically, is to play a lot lik...

Andre Iguodala took his time deciding, but ultimately chose to retire from the NBA this offseason after 19 seasons and four championships.Iguodala’s retirement news was published Friday morning by the New York Times and ESPN.All four of those NBA Finals wins came since joining the Warriors in 2013 and becoming a do-it-all sixth man who helped connect Golden State’s title teams over the next half-decade.Iguodala, 39, famously was named the 2015 NBA Finals MVP on the strength of his defensive work against Cavaliers star LeBron James as the Warriors won the six-game series to capture their first championship in four decades. He also moved into the starting lineup for the final three games of the series, all of which were wins against a Cleveland team reduced by injury. He was also a key player on the 2017 and 2018 title teams, though the Warriors relied less on him with Kevin Durant on the roster. His basketball intelligence paired with his slashing offensive style and physic...
