Using high-tech laser gear, UN-backed team scans Ukraine historical sites to preserve them amid war

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Under the plaintive painted eyes of the holy, a volunteer team of two United Nations-backed engineers watched as a whirling laser took a million measurements a second inside Kyiv’s All Saints Church. The laser swept quickly across the church, part of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, while taking a series of incredibly high-resolution photographs. Those images will be stitched together with navigational data to create a perfect three-dimensional rendering of the holy site, part of a project to protect and preserve historic places across Ukraine now in as much in danger as its people amid Russia’s war on the country. “It’s a critical moment,” said Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, who oversees Ukraine for UNESCO, the U.N.’s cultural agency. “If it’s not protected now, we really risk that this heritage is lost forever.”Since Russia launched the war in February 2022, at least 259 cultural and historic sites have been damaged by the fighting, according to ...

(The Hill) - Target stores in at least five U.S. states had to be evacuated over the weekend after receiving bomb threats, which tie into the recent backlash the U.S.-based retail chain received for its Pride Month merchandise. The Washington Post reported on Monday that local news outlets in parts of Oklahoma, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Louisiana received emails from unknown individuals about bomb threats at the stores. In one email sent to Oklahoma City NBC affiliate KFOR, which is owned by Nexstar Media Group, the individual listed seven locations in and around the Oklahoma City area, claiming that two of the locations already had bombs in them, adding that they hid the bombs inside of products. “The bombs will detonate in several hours, guess which ones have the bombs. Time is ticking,” the email reads, also ending with the date “4/19/1995,” the date of the Oklahoma City bombing.  Oklahoma City Police Department spokesperson Gary Knight said t...

Ask Amy: I lost my job, and I’m planning to send a scathing letter to the bosses

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:09:04 GMT

Dear Amy: I am a 58-year-old worker who was recently laid off.My company hired someone to turn around the department and she failed miserably. The company terminated her and then threw the babies out with the bathwater, getting rid of me and another coworker at the same time.I guess it worked out well for them because the other fired coworker and I were outspoken about what was going on in our department. We knew the new business model would fail, and it did.The hiring manager who created this mess in this extremely toxic environment is a nightmare. Most employees fear her because she is cruel, condescending, and a narcissist. I have seen her reduce people to tears. She is a bully. This person needs to be told off, and I want to be the one to do it.Should I express myself, copying her manager and the CEO, as people need to know what’s going on? Or should I let it go and move on?I really feel the need to express myself so that I can leave this behind.– TerminatedDear Terminated: Defin...
